Multicultural Leadership Scholarship Information

The Multicultural Leadership Scholarship covers required (in-state) student fees for the academic year (fall and spring semesters). To be considered, high school seniors must rank in the upper one-half of their class and be admitted to the university. Transfer students must also be admitted and have at least a minimum of 2.75 cumulative grade point average.

All applicants must have demonstrated leadership in multicultural, school or community activities. Historically under-represented minorities at Missouri State-- African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans-- are strongly encouraged to apply.

Selection Criteria

Scholarship recipients are selected primarily on the basis of leadership in the minority community through participation in school and community activities such as:

  • Band/Orchestra
  • Choir/Vocal Ensembles
  • Community Service Organizations
  • Drama/Debate
  • Multicultural Organizations
  • Newspaper/Yearbook
  • Student Government
  • Varsity Athletics

Application Process

Scholarship applicants must:

  1. Apply for admission to the University and provide high school and/or college transcript(s). High school transcripts should have a recorded ACT or SAT score and a current class rank. No application fee is required if one has already been paid to the Office of Admissions.
  2. Provide a typewritten, double-spaced essay (not to exceed two pages) which describes your multicultural involvement, leadership experience, academic goals and career plans.
  3. Complete and sign the scholarship application.

The scholarship application and essay must be returned together by February 1. Scholarship applications received after the deadline will not be considered.

Applicants must apply for admission to the University and pay the admission application fee before their MLS application will be reviewed by the selection committee.

There is no application fee associated with the Multicultural Leadership Scholarship.

  • Maintain a minimum 2.75 cumulative grade point average (transfer hours are not considered).

Grade Point Averages are calculated  your GPA using the method described in the University Catalog.average

  • Advisor Meeting

  • All recipients must schedule an individual conference once per semester with a MLS Advisor.

  • Multicultural Involvement

  • You are encouraged to participate in a variety of activities/programs throughout the academic year, but your scholastic performance should remain your priority. Therefore, the activities we approve as counting towards your renewal requirements are those that can be completed without interfering too much with your academics. You are required to be involved in two activities/programs each academic year (fall and spring semester). The activities/programs selected must be from two separate constituencies. For example, the same organization or office cannot sponsor both activities/programs. Volunteering of a minimum time commitment of two hours can be used as an event.

Activity 1: A physical commitment on your part (planning, full participation, etc.) to a organization or office serving a recognized constituency.

Activity 2: An activity/program that is different from Activity 1, either a physical commitment or attendance of an event sponsored by a different organization or office serving a recognized constituency.
